A mystical city full of legends, grand architecture, bohemian vibes and 20th-century tragedy, Gay Krakow today might be utterly captivating but is still found in Poland, one of the most challenging EU nations for the LGBT community.

Being gay in Poland is not easy, with a socially conservative duopoly in control of legislation with the backing of the all-powerful Catholic Church, which until recently wherein the grip of anti-gay hysteria and a state-sponsored campaign of LGBTQ persecution.

While Krakow might be rapidly switching with an influx of Western Europeans looking for both history and nightlife, it is still very much a Catholic municipality where pious devotees stream in and out of churches, seemingly towering over every street corner.

Sadly, amidst such blatant homophobia, verbal abuse and male lover bashing are not unheard of.

LGBT Friendly Places in Krakow

Poland may get a bad wrap when it comes to homophobia, but for every primitive moron, you'll find two more evolved legends. What doesn't often make the news is Krakow's huge loved up queer & diverse community. You won't ask for to look hard to find that this open-minded city is open-armed to people of all shapes, sizes, colours & creeds. Here you will identify that a strong, ethical community of evolved creatives and globally-minded humans runs the streets. It's not stylish to be sexist or racist here. Recently, in reaction to violence at an LGBT rally in Białystok and, even more disturbingly, a Polish newspaper named called 'Gazeta Polska' distributing "LGBT Free Zone" Stickers, Krakow's cafe's, bars, clubs, restaurants, galleries & shops include banded together to produce it easier to navigate the city safely by displaying "All are welcome" stickers. Why locals love it

Always good song and busy, Cocon is the largest gay club in Krakow and in Southern Poland. Although it is gay, Cocon's doors are open to all different types of people. They have two separate dance floors with alternative music and special events throughout the year with DJs, live music, and drag shows.

Why you should visit it

Party with the boys (and some girls) of the Polish LGBT community and experience a different side of Krakow. Most party-goers start their evening somewhere in Kazimierz or the Old Town and termination up here until the early hours of the morning.

Stop by on Thursday when the club is opened for karaoke. Free on Fridays and 10 PLN on Saturdays.
