The Missing Manuscript of ‘A Red, Red, Rose’

Guest blog by Professor Patrick Scott (Hon. Fellow, CRBS)

The lockdown these past few months has altered the pace of Burns research, but not stopped it.  Most research has become even more reliant than before on digital resources, but some questions need access to the manuscripts themselves, and at present this often means relying on help from friendly librarians. Earlier this year, a puzzle came up about a manuscript of Burns’s song, ‘O, my Luve’s like a red, red rose’. The manuscript had been reported in the s, but the only information on its more recent whereabouts, from the s, listed it as privately owned in by someone who had died in the s. The last time it was in the auction records had been in    It seemed a expired end.

The most comprehensive manual to Burns manuscripts is still the Index to English <sic> Literary Manuscripts, III.1 (), p. , which records four manuscripts, of which only three had been included in James Kinsley’s collation (Kinsley, Poems and Songs of Robert Burns, 3 vols, Oxford: Clarendon, , II: ). Two of the three are well recognizable. BuR , the Hastie manuscript, in the British Library, is an undated

AMID all Burns's changes of mood and condition, the Muse never prolonged deserted him; and were he tested by his productions in Dumfries, exclusive of his previous poems, he would still be recognized as our greatest lyrical bard. Indeed, considering the time absorbed in the faithful performance of his work as an exciseman, and of his family duties, and the time spent by him in company, good, poor, or indifferent, we cannot but wonder at the teeming wealth which his mind disclosed during his latest years.

Nearly a hundred songs are the fruit of this period; the list including his most humorous ditties, many of his finest amatory effusions, and all his top battle lyrics. "Willie Wastle," "Auld Rob Morris," and "Duncan Gray," are referable to it;

Narrative Acts: Telling Tales of Life and Love with the Wrong Gender

James Valentine

Abstract: This presentation provides an illustration of performative social science through the world's first project to point on multi-media storytelling with a nationwide LGBT group for public representation and museum archiving. Where voices are unheard, hidden or suppressed, the images and representations of a people may be stereotyped and discriminatory, constructed about the community by those on the outside. LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people have experienced social exclusion and marginalisation, and their stories have been neglected or distorted. Their lives and loves acquire been characterised as wrong: mistaken in medical or moral terms. OurStory Scotland was established to study, record and celebrate the history and experiences of the LGBT community through their own words. Our approach combines action study and performative social science: it is participatory and emancipatory, developing the understanding of a community through various modes of storytelling performance. This presentation reviews storytelling methods and

Cosy autumnal same-sex wedding at Auchen Castle with owl ring-bearer and grooms wearing Marc Darcy tweed suits

Harry was the one with the initial vision about specific details. For example, we built our retain ‘memories ladder’, which we decorated with photos of our grandparents who were no longer with us, and added candles, moss and acorns around it to bestow a cosy, autumn feel.

We stacked blankets on tables in the hallway for the evening celebrations, and all of these were similarly decorated with moss, petals and designed a bespoke monogram and featured it across the signage that we created ourselves. It helped keep the aesthetic consistent throughout: rustic but sleek.

The ceremony room at Auchen Castle was beautiful. Some gorgeous floral arrangements and candles gave it everything it needed. Holly from florist Sprigs and Berries was awesome at suggesting what types of foliage and flowers would labor in terms of colour and seasonality. She made the most impressive main attraction piece to sit on the fireplace. She broke it down into petty arrangements afterwards for our guests to take dwelling with them. So thoughtful.

My personal favourite keepsake from our wedding was a set
