After taking her youngest two girls, Georgia and Annabelle, out for a ski day on Season 4, Episode 5, Heather reflected on her powerful relationship with each of her daughters. "Most teenagers would probably rather be caught dead than hang out with their parents," she said in an interview on the episode. "But, as trite as it sounds, my daughters really are my best friends. When I look at and tune in to you I watch a lovely Intellectual whom I think would own been fun to hang out, and now that I am 79, still married, and a retired college professor, I would devotion to have someone favor you in my circle of friends. However, I was 33 before I got married, yet I was still active in the church. In a job interview to function at the Language Development Mission, I had a general authority ask me if I was same-sex attracted because I was 29 and not yet married. I understood his want to ask me, plus I needed the occupation to stay a BYU. Still, amicably co-parenting or not, Heather Gay struggles in her identity as a divorced woman. "We separated nine years ago, but we've been officially divorced for five. And it's still fresh to me," she revealed during a guest appearance on Bravo's "The Daily Dish" podcast. "Like it still is painful. I can barely say ex-husband, I always say the girls' father, or my husband. It's hard for me to even say that," she continued. "I never manage with me being divorced. I don't know why. It's like a massive scarlet letter, like this giant stamp of defeat. I've never been qualified to really break away from it."
She does acknowledge, however, that the demonstrate has given her a new lease on being and even instilled her with some much-needed confidence. "Throughout filming, I was able to see myself as independent and as an individual. And this has been like, I wouldn't say therapeutic, but it's been healing to kind of come into my own a small bit," she explained. "Now I can say ex-husband, I can say I'm divorced without, you understand, trembling and crying," she added.
