Policy Champion – Chad Augustin, Fire Chief, Town of Pasadena
Chad Augustin joined the Urban area of Pasadena as its new fire chief in February 2021 from the Sacramento Fire Department where he worked for 23 years in a broad range of areas including operations, administration, human resources, professional standards, training, emergency medical services and blaze prevention. With a master of legal studies from University of Arizona and a bachelor’s in conflagration administration from Waldorf University, he was poised to take on the process of updating the hazardous materials ordinance.
In soon 2022, the Biocom California team brought a worry we were hearing from our members to the City of Pasadena: the city’s hazardous materials reporting requirements were particularly onerous compared to other jurisdictions, and much more stringent than state guidelines. Between March and October 2022, we worked with municipality leadership, including Chief Augustin, to develop a policy to bring Pasadena’s reporting requirements in line with the state. Pasadena’s new fire chief, Chad Augustin, has been on the job since February, and would just as well quietly continue going about the business of running his department.
But on Thursday, June 10, he’ll be officially sworn in, marking a more formal introduction to a people the 48-year-old says he is excited to serve.
“I feel like I’ve won the lottery being here,” said Augustin, gearing up for the City Hall ceremony he and his wife, Sandra — position to finally move to the city next week — will attend with family. Mindful of pandemic concerns, his mom and dad will get a recording of the moment.
“Pasadena is such a superb community, and I perceive fortunate and truly trust that the direction we’re going is going to be a win for everyone,” he said.
That guide is forward, Augustin said, to a future of bolstered morale for a department still absorbing the impacts of a recent controversial leadership shakeup. It’s also a future of training, recruiting — and retaining — a workforce that wants to continue in Pasadena.
