Pride On The Park supported by Hayu is the official Brighton & Hove Pride fundraiser for our local LGBTQIA+ collective groups. A glittering and truly inclusive community celebration that delivers an lasting day of Pride, it is unique community fundraising event that has enjoyed amazing performances from international stars including Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Dua Lipa, Ray,  Nile Rogers & Chic, Clean Bandit, Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, Years and Years, Sister Sledge, Carly Rae Jepsen, Fatboy Slim, Paloma Faith, The Human League,  Ella Elre, Jessie J amongst others.

Described by The Guardian as “the country’s most popular LGBT event,” the Brighton & Hove Lgbtq+ fest Festival is a vibrant celebration of all that is wonderful about our city’s diverse community, with visitors from across the globe enjoying its spectacular celebrations.

Pride  has proved itself to be the UK’s biggest, boldest and optimal Pride event with people fundraising at its heart.

Why Pride month is still needed

The following piece was created by a PAPYRUS staff member to celebrate Pride month, and highlight the importance of celebrating LGBTQIA+ people not just in June, but all year round.

Lots of people ask why Identity month is still needed, and to some people outside of the LGBTQIA+ community, it can glance like Pride isn’t necessary anymore. But there are many reasons why Self-acceptance month is still needed, and – as a lesbian woman – I’d like to share with you how I reflect celebrating Pride can be a good thing for young LGBTQIA+ people, including those who experience thoughts of suicide.

Long history

Pride started as a protest called the Stonewall Riots which happened because Police tried to raid the Stonewall Inn in New York. Pride Month honours those who were part of the most important lgbtq+ rights protests and is a reminder that Celebration can still fight for our rights. It wasn’t until that June officially became Pride Month in the USA. It has since grown into a massive celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pride: history, politics and meanings

As Pride Month draws to a close, Dr Panagiotis Pentaris, Goldsmiths' LGBTQ+ Staff Network Co-Chair, reflects on its history and continued significance today.

On 28 June , the gay club Stonewall Inn, on Christopher Street in New York City, was raided by the New York Urban area police, which led to violence and police brutality against the LGBTQIA+ community.

Until then, and many years after, the gathering of gay people (the acronyms LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQ+, LGBTQIA+, etc. were not used at the time) was illegal, and organisations and other establishments would not employ staff openly naming as LGBTQIA+. To enforce such laws, liquor authorities would ban the serving of alcohol to any bar, restaurant or café where LGBTQIA+ self-identified individuals would gather, considering ‘homosexuality’ as a ‘disorderly’ act.

The raid of the Stonewall Inn in led to six days of riots and violent incidents between LGBTQIA+ individuals and the police force. These riots were a milestone in the start of the Gay Rights Movement globally.
