I recently finished the entire series of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix. My queer character of analysis is Lily Aldrin because first of all, I absolutely love her and secondly, she displays bisexual tendencies throughout some episodes. Before my studies in Sexuality and Media, I truly believed her behavior was pure comedy and not serious whatsoever. However, once learning about Queer Theory, I posthaste realized nothing in the media is an accident. Here’s Some Background
The main character is Ted Mosby. Ted is explaining to his children the timeline of influential events before he met their mother. Ted has an entourage of best friends. Barney Stinson and Robin Scherbatsky are an interesting couple. They are always on and off, but end up getting married and quickly divorced.
Although Lily is madly in love with her husband, Marsha
Marshall and Lily to their newborn son: “You’re gonna love the park, buddy. It’s a great place to meet chicks. Or-or dudes. Or both.” “Oh, we love you no matter what.” How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) generally shows this nice of acceptance towards the LGBTQ through plot lines and characterization that does not make a fuss over sexual orientation and identity.
Set in diverse and liberal New York, the series has presented characters who deviate from society’s standardized binary of genders. As opposed to mainstream television’s common sensationalism of homosexuality in a stereotypical and superficial manner, HIMYM tells the audience to look at a person on more than one aspect of their life.
In an episode called “Single Stamina,” Barney’s brother James comes to New York for a visit. Barney is a womanizer who goes through intricate schemes to attract women to sleep with him. James is exactly like Barney, except for the truth that he is male lover and therefore hits on men. Even so, their difference in sexual orientation does not reflect on their appearances – both of them have a fondness for wearing suits to establish their control in public places. James is not portrayed as t

In the "How I Met Your Mother" Season 3 episode "The Bracket," Barney finds himself striking out with women because every time he hits on a woman, another lady waits until Barney walks away. She then goes up to the woman and warns them about Barney's lying ways. When Barney finally finds the lady who he thinks is responsible for this behave of humanitarianism, he doesn't remember her and tries to apologize for all the terrible things he's done over the years.
While many of the things that Barney has done are pretty deplorable, one of the things he admits to in the midst of his apology is especially heinous. "At one point, I'm lovely sure I sold a woman," Barney admits, shockingly. "I didn't speak the language, but I shook a guy's hand, he gave me the keys to a Mercedes, and I left her there." Whoa, back up there, because that's somehow even worse than everything else that Barney's done. If it's true, that means Barney participated in human trafficking, which is even more morally abhorrent than tricking women into sex.
