as "The Natural"
Dustin Patrick Runnels (born April 11, 1969) is an American Professional Wrestler best established by his ring names Dustin Rhodes and Goldust. He is the son of WWE Hall of Famer "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, the half-brother of WWE superstar and All Elite Wrestling cofounder Cody Rhodes and the ex-husband of former WWE Diva Terri "Marlena" Runnels. While he is most known for his perform in WWE and WCW, he has also competed for All Japan Pro Wrestling, the United States Wrestling Association in Memphis, TNA, Fighting Opera HUSTLE, and many independent promotions around the U.S.
Dustin got his start bouncing between WCW and the independent scene, chasing tag team gold here and there as himself, taking on the moniker "The Natural" most places he went, even being the US champion at one signal. However, his star-making gimmick came when he returned to the WWF in 1995 as the mysterious, gold painted figure famous only as Goldust; established for his mysterious, sensual mannerisms and penchant for mind games, and above all else: a lust for all things gold. The character went through all sorts of bizarre twists and turns over the years
What Didn’t You Understand About Goldust As Baby Brand-new Year?
When people ask me which character I enjoyed writing for the most, the answer without even thinking is Dustin Rhodes as Goldust.
Wanting me to both write for and produce Goldust, Vince McMahon called me into his office to give me his vision of the character. When Vince first laid out the Goldust character to me, he really didn’t have much.
He said he wanted him to be “old Hollywood” and he had down the move where Goldust slid his hands from his waste to over his chest, took a DEEP breath in and said, “Goldust”. Man, you had to see Vince do that—it’s exactly as you are imagining right now.
To a writer or a producer, that really wasn’t much. Vince never had an actual explanation of who Goldust was, so that was something that I was just going to allow to happen organically.
At that age I certainly knew that Goldust wasn’t gay—not that there’s anything wrong with that—but I could also see that he was—yes—creepy, and also a superb actor—which Dustin was. He HAD TO BE to play this part.
One of the first things I did was get a number of books with nothing but old movies lines in

Dustin Rhodes vs. Black Bart for the CWA Title – Memphis, July 29, 1989
A little before Dustin Rhodes made his debut, alongside his father, in the WWF in 1990 he was testing the waters in smaller promotions. One of those places was Jerry Lawler’s Memphis. In our first match he takes on Black Bart, who was mostly established in the south. It is for the CWA title, which was the secondary belt at the time in Memphis.
This is a real interesting glance at Dustin as a rookie. He is wearing the same outfit as Dusty and is copying some of his mannerisms and even the bionic elbow. Dustin really shines in the beginning using some nice dropkicks and showing off how he differs from Dusty with his speed. His selling is great even at the beginning of his career.
After Dustin’s shine segment, Black Bart rough houses Dustin. The biggest see of the match sees Bart throw Dustin over the announce table. After quite a beat down, Dustin tries a comeback with his bulldog, only to be shoved into the referee. From here is a pretty clever finish. Bart tries to use his branding iron, Dustin grabs it. As the referee takes i
