During his 83 years of being, the legendary barrier breaker Roman Gabriel did what he knew to perform best. Play the game he loved to the best of his abilities. Having recently passed away, a deeper look by the public was taken into the life of the 1969 NFL MVP and his incredible journey through football.
Gabriel was born in Wilmington, N.C., in 1940. The son of Filipino immigrants, Gabriel would go on to participate at in-state program NC State where he'd actor for the Wolfpack. A two-time first-team All-American and two-time ACC Player of the Year, Gabriel would have his jersey retired right after his college career ended. His collegiate exploits would lead to his selection by the Rams in the 1962 NFL Draft.
Gabriel was the second overall pick. He was also the first overall pick by the AFL's Oakland Raiders. Gabriel chose the Rams and it was a matchless choice for both parties. Gabriel played 11 years with the team, earning not only an MVP, but a first-team All-Pro selection, two second-team All-Pro selections, and four Pro Bowl nods.

Gabriel Garcia Roman
Gabriel Garcia Roman was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and raised in Chicago’s northwest side. He received his Bachelor of Arts from The City College of New York where he studied studio art. Garcia is a photo-based artist and craftsman exploring identity through printmaking, fiber arts, and woodworking.
His perform has been shown at the International Center of Photography (ICP), Cathedral of St. John the Celestial, the Museum of Latin American Art, and Galeria de la Raza, to name a few. He is part of ICP’s permanent collection. Gabriel is a 2018 recipient of National Association of Latino Arts & Culture’s musician grant.
Most recently, he brought his Queer Icons series to the streets of New York City, where he collaborated with the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Woman-loving woman Art to create a monumental procession of 100 of his images for World Pride 2019.
Former NFL quarterback Roman Gabriel died Saturday morning, his son announced on social media. Gabriel was 83.
"I am sad to declare my father Roman Gabriel passed away peacefully this morning of natural causes at his home. The entire family asked for your prayers, and to please respect our privacy. I love you dad," Roman Gabriel III wrote on X.

After starring at North Carolina State from 1959-61, Gabriel was the No. 1 overall grab in the AFL and the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft in 1962. He signed with the NFL's Rams rather than the AFL's Raiders.
He was a Pro Bowler in 1967, '68 and '69 and earned All-Pro and league MVP honors in 1969. He passed for 2,549 yards with a league-best 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his MVP season when the Rams went 11-3.
Gabriel, though, never won a playoff game, going 0-2 in the postseason.
After 11 seasons with the Rams, Gabriel finished his career with five seasons with the Eagles. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 1973 when he led the league in attempts (460), completions (270), passing yards (3,219) and touchdowns (23).
