Lorna x men

Polaris: Psychology, Power, and Personhood – Uncanny X-Men #

The primary discourse surrounding the X-Men and mutants in Marvel Comics focuses on metaphor. A less nuanced element in X-Men comics revolves around characters who struggle with mental health issues. In writing, approaching topics like trauma, psychological afflictions, or any other facet of psychology requires sensitivity. Sadly, many writers either lack a basic understanding of individuals who deal with real disorders and mental illness, or their depictions of characters with these afflictions manifest erroneous.

Mental health is a subject that I experience deeply and passionately about. My desire to absorb more about psychology and sociology stemmed from several college courses I took over the last scant years. I took a class called Sociology of Murder and it completely changed my perception about aberrant behavior. Since the topics of murder and genocide also surface in X-Men (a comic novel series I have only skimmed the surface of reading) I am fascinated by their representation in the expansive X-Men history. As a general disclaimer, I want to deposit forth the knowledge that, in no way am I an expert in psychology, or th

All of those plot points happen in the first four issues of Lorna&#;s existence, and set the stage for her complicated superheroic life. Lorna would first take the superhero name Magnetrix and later Polaris, and she would be among the X-Men trapped on Krakoa in the landmark reboot issue Giant-Size X-Men #1. In addition to Mesmero, numerous other figures would exert mind control over Lorna, including the Shi&#;ar, the Savage Land conquerer Zadeline, Apocalypse, and especially Malice, a non-corporeal mutant who turned turned Polaris into one of the X-Men&#;s more brutal antagonists.

For most of her history, Polaris has been romantically linked with Havok, the doofy younger brother of Cyclops. The two served together in X-Factor, the X-Men, and the Starjammers, breaking up and getting together again on a nearly constant rotation. Along the way, the true, not robot Magneto showed up and claimed her as his actual daughter, which caused her to sometimes work against the X-Men.

Through it all, Lorna has won over fans for her no-nonsense attitude and remarkable self-assurance, despite all the suffering she&#;s experienced. For many, Lorna embodies the central appeal of the X-Men con

BIOGRAPHY - Page 1

The inception of Lorna Dane starts with Magnus, the guy who would later be known as Magneto, the mutant master of magnetism. At some point after his wife Magda had abandoned him in horror over his uncanny magnetic abilities, Magnus had an affair with a married woman named Suzanna. It’s not known for how long the affair lasted, whether they only dated once or several times, but it nevertheless resulted in a pregnancy. Suzanna decided that she would pass the child off as the offspring of her husband Arnold, a commercial pilot, a deception which appears to possess been agreeable to Magneto. As Lorna grew and unusual things started to occur around her, Arnold became suspicious and had a DNA test conducted, confirming that she was not his daughter. Arnold decided to confront his wife while they were aboard a plane he was flying Las Vegas and a heated argument erupted. A three year old Lorna Dane awoke to her “parents” raucously arguing over her and became upset. This trauma catalyzed the manifestation of her own inherited magnetic powers and she blew apart the plane, turning her hair brown hair green and seemingly killing her mother and her husband.

A short time

Lorna Dane AKA Polaris… among other things.

With convention season starting back up, figured it might be period to start writing this column on a more regular basis again.

Today I wanted to try something a little different…. This is probably the first time I actually don’t have a strong guide to argue for. When I started researching Polaris, I thought it was going to be lovely cut and dry… except it really wasn’t.

First up is X-men #49… or Uncanny X-Men if you prefer.

This book gets listed way too often as the first Polaris, which is not accurate. It is the first appearance of Lorna Dane, real. It qualifies as a full appearance for Lorna as she appears throughout the issue.

Lorna is what’s referred to as a Latent Mutant in issue Meaning, her powers existing but have not yet developed or manifested. While she doesn’t appear initial with her green hair, it’s relieved later in the issue that she does in fact have the trademark green hair. Love in the TV present Gifted, she dyes it to fit in. These are important distinction to make since she does not exhibit any powers and is never referred to as Polaris in this issue.

Now let’s relocate on to X-Men #
