I Thought X-Men Was Determined to Ruin My Favorite Mutant, And I’m So Glad I Was Wrong
Warning: Spoilers for NYX #8!Most X-Men fans know what it's like to earn attached to a particular mutant and follow them through highs and lows, but there are rare feelings worse than watching a beloved character receive their name dragged through the mud. As a longtime Hellion fan, I've been fighting that battle with NYX. The latest issue finally ended my suffering and proved that I underestimated the creativeteam's understanding of Julian Keller.
NYX #8 by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Francesco Mortarino gave me the moment I've been hoping for since the series was announced. Hellion's journey from a spoiled well-off kid to a promising leader, devoted friend, and incredibly talented revolutionary is one of the most compelling stories any juvenile mutant has received, yet he's spent the excel part of a decade being sidelined.
Despite missing the character, Julian's go back as the Magneto-esque villain, the Krakoan, was an immediate disappointment for me. I felt his heartbreaking journey was undervalued, and I'm delighted that NYX #8confirmed what I've established since his Academy X days: Hell Warning: contains spoilers for NYX #8The X-Men franchise is filled with iconic antiheroes fancy Wolverine, Archangel, and Magneto, but one recent antihero - the young mutant Hellion - is one I truly never mind I would be rooting for. Debuting as the villainous Krakoan in the post-Krakoa NYX comic, Julian Keller's tragic backstory was recently retold in NYX #8, a comic that has made me protect for the character in a way I never have before. Julian debuted in New Mutants () #2 as a new learner at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, eventually coming under the tutelage of Emma Frost and organism named leader of her youth squad, the Hellions. NYX #8, from writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing with art by Francesco Mortarino, sees Laura, Sophie, and Kiden rescuing Julian after his imprisonment for "killing" six human politicians. The issue is a wonderful character study into the troubled Hellion, depicting him begging for death in Krakoa's Crucible, his romantic relationship with Laura, and finally revealing the truth: Julian never killed the politicians, and he is not capable of The following contains major spoilers for NYX#8, on sale now from Marvel Comics. While the O*N*E* agents are more than happy to torture whatever information they can out of Hellion, his former teammates have a less intrusive plan for uncovering the truth. As it turns out, Hellion's supposed victims never disoriented their lives in the first place, though he was happy to grant the rest of the world believe they did if it meant he could both stand up for mutants everywhere and avoid becoming a villain in the process. Spider-Gwen has finally unmasked Marvel's other Jet Tarantula, and the fact about the man behind the mask has completely broken her heart. COSTUME GALLERY 1) As a member of the Hellions Squad, Julian's original costume was a crimson one-piece spandex uniform with light pink bands running across his hips, down his thighs and up from his feet to his calves. A dark, purple panel was positioned across his chest, on which a light, pink X symbol was positioned in the middle of his chest. Bands of the dusky purple crossed down across his abs. Julian wore short crimson gloves. His costume was sleeveless, but he occasionally wore a purple jacket. The colors of his costume, and those of his Hellions Squad teammates, were no doubt a tribute to the original Hellions. [New X-Men: Academy X #2] 2) By the time that Julian departed for summer vacation, he and the rest of the Hellions Squad had begun wearing somewhat sleeker versions of their costumes, with the colors now a predominant red for the anchor of the one-piece, with the pink accents, including the X on the chest, now white.
